Real friend vs fake friend: 12 signs to tell the difference

Our quiz is a joke about blocking friends who don't know your favourite food. Real friendship, though, is not about trivia. Some people know every detail about you and still are not good friends, and some barely remember your birthday but would drop everything to help you. Here are some honest signs to look for.

Signs of a real friend

1. They are happy when good things happen to you

A real friend celebrates your wins without turning the conversation back to themselves. If your good news makes them go quiet or competitive, notice that.

2. They show up when it is not fun

Anyone can be around for parties. A real friend checks on you when you are sick, stressed or sad, even if all they can do is send a message.

3. They tell you the truth, kindly

True friends don't only say what you want to hear. They will tell you when you are making a mistake, but they do it gently and in private, not to embarrass you.

4. Your secrets stay secret

If you tell them something private and it never comes back to you from someone else, that is trust earned.

5. They remember the little things

They remember the exam you were nervous about, or how you take your tea. Small details show they actually listen.

6. You can be yourself around them

With a real friend you don't have to perform. You can be silly, quiet, or messy, and nothing changes.

Warning signs of a fake friend

7. They only call when they need something

If almost every message from them is a favour, a request or a problem they want you to solve, the friendship may be one-sided.

8. They talk about other friends behind their backs

If someone gossips to you about others, it is likely they gossip about you too.

9. They put you down, then say "just joking"

Teasing between friends is normal. Repeated jokes that make you feel small, especially in front of others, are not.

10. They disappear when you need help

Busy lives are real, and nobody can always be there. But if they are never available when it matters, that is a pattern.

11. They compete with you

Every story you tell, they have a bigger one. Every success you have, they downplay. Friendship is not a contest.

12. You feel worse after seeing them

This is the simplest test. After spending time with a real friend, you usually feel lighter. If you often feel drained, anxious or judged, listen to that feeling.

So what should you do?

Nobody is a perfect friend all the time, including us. One bad day doesn't make someone fake. Look for patterns over time, not single moments.

If something bothers you, try talking about it honestly first. Many friendships get stronger after an awkward but kind conversation. If nothing changes, it is okay to spend less time with someone and more time with the people who make you feel good. You don't need a dramatic "block". Sometimes it is enough to simply give your energy to the friends who give theirs back.

And if you want to find out, just for fun, which of your friends actually pays attention? That is what our quiz is for.
